IBM is saying(*) that, at least in many use cases, the DS8800 is more affordable than its predecessors. How much more affordable? "It depends."
May I also point out that tape is no longer required to load z/OS. Thus it is now possible to configure and use a new mainframe with z/OS but without any tape drives.
