Neither one is a word in any language with which I am familiar. He
might have been confusing shlemiel with shliemazal and then lost an
Ell somewhere along the line.

Well, shlemiel and shliemazal are Yiddish, but AFAIK "shemozzle" isn't
anything. Are you sure that what you heard in the land of Oz didn't
have an L in the first syllable?
