1. It's not EXT. It can be EXTREQ, or EXTPREF. 2. It can be used for extended format (EF) datasets. EF can be PS or VSAM KSDS, ESDS, RRDS, LDS, with some excpetions (for example ICF catalogs cannot be EF). So, EXT* can be used not only for VSAM. 3. PDS and PDSE cannot use EF. 4. Multi-volume allocation is perfectly possible without EF. VSAM and PS can be multivolume, but PDS and PDSE cannot. 5. Compression is possible only for EF PS and EF VSAM KSDS (for part of data component's record only). 6.
