I just say "Use REXX!" and be done with it. Around here, we'd likely use EasyTrieve Plus for this sort of need. It creates fairly good modules and it can be either intepreted (actually compile-and-go) or compiled like COBOL and run like a normal batch program. I will refrain from suggesting a Perl solution. <grin>
