Following Kees's suggestion, may I point you to the following manual that
catches my attention each time I go looking up a z/OS manual:

I just called it up and I see it starts with the birth of the mainframe in
the 1950s! I don't expect you'll need all nearly 650 pages to get suitable
orientation.
