If I only had the choice, but in bigger companys other powers decide ;-( Back to the OPs question: I'd recommend to get someone to teach you the basics, especially if people are familiar with z/OS but "don't have a clue on UNIX". It helps to avoid the dreadful "there is a wall" thinking.
