In order to check this out, if you can see in the REXX clist where
the first output data stream is written, you should ensure that the
"Erase Write" command is the first byte rather than the "Erase Write
Alternate". With the standard IBM-supplied mode table entry,
D4C32XX3, "Erase Write", 0xF5, instructs the display microcode or the
emulator programming that the screen is to have 24 rows of characters
in 80 columns
I believe that D4C32XX3 allows the terminal to set the primary screen
size to other values.
No. D4C32XX3 supports only a 24x80 primary (default) screen size. It's
only the alternate size that is dynamically obtained.
One of the changes to the protocol I've been trying to get IBM and other
to implement is to allow for user-defined primary screen sizes. My
proposal has been to allow a x'00' BINPRESZ value (undefined) to be
loosely interpreted as "not defined by the host". That is, both sizes
will be defined by the response to Read-Partition Query.
So far, IBM's Session Manager for z/OS (rebranded Macro4 Tubes),
SeaGull's BlueZone emulator, and Tom Brennan's Vista are playing nicely
in this arena using this adaptation of the standard.
IBM's Netview developers gave me a custom modification to allow Netview
to support primary sizes other than 24x80 and, after ten months of
waiting, the TSO/E TCAS developers just last week provided me with a
customized TCAS that won't choke on BINPRESZ = x'00'. Unfortunately, the
TCAS people didn't seem to understand what I was really asking for,
since their solution forces everything to 24x80 in that case. :-(
An alternative proposal is for IBM to standardize/document a new
BINPRESZ value (e.g., x'04') which means both sizes are to be determined
dynamically.
