Just to clarify: although the results appear similar, what z/VM has done 'forever' is not actually a reIPL.

z/OS is using a relatively new System z hardware function that reIPLs the LPAR. This is a _real_ IPL!

z/VM was simulating that by shutting down (almost completely, but not quite) and then branching back to the top of the code from within the _same IPL_ as understood by the hardware.
