You CAN share it read/write, but do you want to? NOT a good idea, as others have said, you will find "junk" collecting in it.
The root here was made read/write when the previous person did 1.10, but under 1.12, I made it read-only. For a real life example of "junk collecting in the root". Our 1.10 read/write root - 128,000 tracks Our 1.12 read only root - 48,000 tracks (as it should be).
