Exactly! After all that effort--by IBM and numerous ISVs--to make ILM for z/OS a reality, we ended up no further ahead that before we started. Well, not quite. At least, we all now have a better understanding of the enormity of the project. Another side benefit are nice System z capacity query capabilities--far better than what existed before. Also, the need for license compliance management didn't go away just because the ILM for z/OS project failed. Software producers seized on the opportunity to produce priced products to help. Of course, the downside is that product license keys themselves are still managed and applied using a hodge-podge of techniques. But, license compliance products are still a big step in the right direction.
