Jim, We run two 3584 ATL systems with CA1 as our tape management system. I don't think that the type of TMS makes a difference. We don't assign volser ranges to an ATL. When the tapes come back from vault, we check how much scratch of each type is in each and then divide the tape between the libraries to balance the scratch.
We have both JA and JJ tapes. We assign each type its own volser range. My understanding is that when a tape enters the library it will query the host. OAM will check the TMS for validity. If it is a valid tape, OAM will update SMS that the tape is in the library and return the TMS scratch status to the library, For a valid tape, the library assigns it to the logical library partition for that host and then sets the scratch status. If the tape is returned as invalid by all hosts, it stays unassigned and may or may not get ejected. For CA-1, a tape is valid if it is not in DELETE status and the BAD flag is not set.
