Why not z11? I don't know.
Why 196 and 114? I heard about it:
1xx means FIRST generation (of what? naming convention?)
96 means number of processors inside. Note, you can buy "only" 80 of
them, but it really contains 96 processors, inlcuidng SAPs and spares.
14 is for M10 model (4 are for spares and SAPs).
BTW: I really can't understand "marketing names" like z196, TS1140, or
DS8000. Why don't they use names like Jaguar (ok, it's partially used),
MAGSTAR, T-REX, MtBlanc or Cindy Crawford?
Last, bit not least: Athlon, or Pentium sounds much better than CMOS
