Please. *NEVER EVER* APPLY (with or without CHECK) using BYPASS(HOLDERROR)
unless you are EXPLICITLY instructed to do so by a Level 2 or 3 support
person. If hold errors can be resolved in the current APPLY job, then they
will be resolved by fixing PTFs. Otherwise let PE PTFs fail. They will not
hurt you nearly as much as forcing on a PTF that has known but as yet
unresolvable errors. Sysprogs often try too hard to get CC 0 when CC 8 is
fine--provided you understand why.

After APPLY CHECK with BYPASS(HOLDSYS), inspect all hold data to make sure
it's safe to proceed. Watch for requirements to install simultaneously on
all sharing systems (rare) or to install a particular PTF on all sharing
members as a prerequisite to installing some other PTF on any member (not
rare). If a PTF is marked in error but there is no fix for the PE APAR,
then let it fail. The CAUSER report will summarize the 'initial cause'
failures very concisely. Look there first and last.

The answer to the question 'when to clean up HOLDDATA' is always
'tomorrow'. If a fixing PTF--or in extreme cases an APAR test fix--cannot
be obtained, then leave the bad PTF off for now. Your system will not
suffer for lack of a bad PTF unless you desperately need something else in
the chain. That's where explicit advice from support may override the rule.
Even then proceed with awe and trepidation. And a freshly updated resume.

One of the hardest lessons to learn as a sysprog is this: No matter how
hard you try, it's always broken. Broken big. Broken small. Usually broken
so slightly that you wouldn't even know if it weren't for Enhanced Hold
Data. Thank POK for EHD. Most other platforms have nothing comparable:
machine readable information on maintenance problems that you can
investigate and then make informed decisions on how to proceed. Informed,
not guaranteed.

Here's a variant of an old saw in our profession: Nobody ever got fired for
refusing to jam on a broken PTF.
