: Funny, Baldor Electric runs a 100% mainframe SAP installation (using Linux
: on z and DB2 z/OS) and spends less that just about anyone running SAP on
: anything. And they have the total cost numbers to prove it.
: ...
: I would also rerun the numbers with zIIP. That just changed things
: radically.

Mmmmm - I hear Timothy beating this drum yet again.
Unfortunately I too know of a site looking to move SAP R3 off the mainframe.
The apps server instances have already gone, the DB2 side is under attack.
All going to M$oft, *not* Linux.

To stay on a big fella, would require (at least):
- VM license, and a skillset they don't have and don't want to pay to
obtain.
- Linux. Ditto applies; especially retraining all the Windows support
people.
- maybe an IFL - another US$125000 perhaps.
- and a zIIP maybe - another US$125000 ???. Nope - that'd require a z/OS
upgrade, a DB2 upgrade, *AND* the replacement of z990 with z9. And of
course, at the moment we don't even know when they'll be available.

All this in addition to all the other costs - especially the monthly
software bill.

I'd reckon that to be a pretty hard sell, but I don't do that side of the
business.
