Is this really so?  When SMF reports a particular number of EXCPs, I
believe it's really just counting blocks (SMF gurus feel free to chime
in here).  The access methods do a lot of chaining/buffering under the
covers and so I'd be surprised if your large-LRECL datasets are actually
hurting.

Do consider striping, no matter the LRECL.
