I think you missed Ron's point.
At the risk of exagerating, you can have a million datasets, that (while taking 
up catalogue space) have no impact to performance.
The catalogue is indexed.
It is cached.
But, if you don't touch a DSN (or an alias) it is not loaded, opened, or 
referenced!
