At least one.
You can have up to three (pre-z9), depending on how many CP's are active.
I was told three; I have never had more than two.
(I have never had more than 10 CP's, either).

Originally stood for I/O Processor.
Changed to Integrated Offload Processor (ES/9000 Series), changed to SAP with 
the 9672.

Truly, the first specialty engine.
Introduced on the 308x, IIRC.
