Sorry I wasn't clear. By TSO/E, I was considering all IBM TSO
facilities, not just the base program. I.e., the support should be
extended to ISPF/PDF facilities (especially EDIT), SDSF, etc.
That's already implicit in this support. GTTERM -- the service used
by command processors to get the screen geometries -- returns exactly
what one would expect.
We are going around in circles; of course I expect GTTERM to return
the correct sizes. I'm proposing that as part of the geometry support,
there also be additional features. For instance, ISPF screens other
than nn*80; EDIT with 80 data columns and a separate sequence number
(SF in columns 1 and 82, for a 90 byte line width); EDIT with an 8
byte sequence number (SF in column 1, 72 bytes of text, SF, 8 bytes of
sequence, for width of 82); if user definable, so much the better
(consider something similar to BOUNDS, where the user could specify
the SF position). Should be easy enough to select with a PROFILE option.
Circles indeed! I just "fired up" a TSO/E session with 43x92 and 43x132
primary/alternate screen sizes. ISPF works just fine as do all of the
ISPF applications I tried. When editing an 80-column data set, the EDIT
display is centered with two bytes of "black space" on either side
(delimited by attribute bytes from SFE orders). I'm not sure what's
missing, but I'll concede that, if one looks hard enough, there's nearly
always room for some improvement.
In any case, proposing improvements to ISPF applications' handling of
various screen geometries is at best tangential to the subject of
enhancing VTAM applications to support BINPSIZE=x'00'. The whole point
of this initiative is to allow users to specify their own
primary/alternate screen sizes in their 3270 emulators' configuration
rather than have them defined by specialized logmodes maintained by the
VTAM sysprog.
