I agree. But I don't know if I would lay all of the blame on IBM. Today's corporations do not want the "old style" sysprog (who can write code, debug code, etc). They want "system administrators" who have just (barely) enough training to be able to install and customize software according to the vendor's documentation. They want the vendor (IBM in this case) to be responsible for any and all problems and most problem determination. The reason is that a well trained, knowledgable person can demand a higher salary. By demanding a "cook book" approach, they get less skilled, less expensive people. Granted that a "cook book" cook will never be a great chef, but companies are running "diners" now, not "restaurants". And a "diner" doesn't require a chef, just a cook. (no offense meant to cooks). -- John McKown Senior Systems Programmer HealthMarkets Keeping the Promise of Affordable Coverage Administrative Services Group Information Technology This message (including any attachments) contains confidential information intended for a specific individual and purpose, and its content is protected by law.
