Does anybody seriously dispute that Linux is popular? That Linux is
growing? Including the mainframe? What I am suggesting is the following:

1. More people here should add Linux to their knowledge base -- ideally
leading efforts in your shops to implement Linux for certain projects.
Ostrich strategies do not work, IMHO.

I've been trying here, but the Windows people (at least in the past)
have been "driving the boat". The new CIO is more platform agnostic, but
as "a voice crying in the wilderness", I'm fairly ineffective in getting
anyone interested.

2. Many of you are already learning Linux (in effect) and just don't know it. USS skills are quite transferable. (And you need at least a little
bit of USS knowledge to be a competent z/OS system programmer, in all
candor.)

My was the reverse. I have been using Linux/Intel at home for quite a
while (finally 99.9% off of Windows!). z/OS UNIX was very easy to pick
up. The other z/OS sysprogs here basically don't like UNIX. I may need
to suggest a minor class on UNIX concepts for them (even invite
interested programmers - what a concept!)

Well, I know you're not going to offer one of our
classes, but perhaps they would be intrigued by my
paper on hosting a web site on z/OS, just as a
teaser to get them hooked.

and scroll down to the next-to-last entry in the first table.
