Another nice benefit is that IFLs (and zIIPs and zAAPs) carry forward one-for-one with a model upgrade, and they get faster in the process. One was related to moving TSM off of z/OS to run on zLinux under >z/VM and the other was moving TAMe from AIX (I think.. it could have >been Wintel). Rule of thumb (oversimplification? :-)): moving something from z/OS onto mainframe Linux is not usually a good idea. Tivoli Storage Manager would probably be a particularly bad candidate, so your outcome would have been predicted. Do you happen to know what the thinking was on that? It's a very odd choice. Storage management is extremely highly evolved and very efficient on z/OS. Tivoli Access Manager for e-business is usually a good fit for Linux on z, but it sounds like you never got there because of the TSM project woes. Another rule of thumb: in no way is Linux a substitute or replacement for z/OS. It frequently complements z/OS, but it's very, very hard to compete against z/OS for performance efficiency, capabilities, and qualities of service. One possible exception is IBI Web Focus (a reporting tool) which seems to be a bit of a problem child for some under z/OS, as Robert Nix alluded to. WebSphere Application Server is interesting. In the post-zAAP world with WAS V5 or V6 I think z/OS is awfully nice. WAS is no longer a reason to create your first mainframe Linux installation. There are other reasons instead. WebSphere Commerce Server, for example. Or SAP. - - - - - Timothy F. Sipples Consulting Enterprise Software Architect, z9/zSeries IBM Japan, Ltd.
