Dave, What were you using as your data mover back then? I believe I restored AUTODUMP'ed volumes as fast as DFSMSdss dumps when using DSS as the data mover.

It took 5 hours to restore 15 ML1 volumes. We quickly changed to daily DSS Backups for ML1.
