We're using TapeCopy/VDR by OpenTech Systems and like it. VDR = Virtual
Disaster Recovery

The simple versionof our implementation:
Applications creates all their DR tapes in our VTS and we vault them using
special DR vault codes (CA1). Then we have a set of TapeCopy batch jobs
that takes copies of all the virtual tapes vaulted to those vault codes
and stacks them on 3590's. These 'container' tapes are then vaulted
offsite and taken to DR. Don't remember the exact #'s, but for sure we
went from thousands of vaulted cartridges to a few hundred.

At DR we restore a subset of the data to a VTS at DR - say the last week's
worth of backups. The rest of the tapes are re-cataloged to the container
tapes. We control how much of what goes where.

A nice side benefit is that application creates 1 tape in their cycle and
gets both an on-site & an off-site copy.

I'm sure this has been discussed off and on, but technologies have changed

over time, too - so I would like to ask anyone has good advice for dealing

with virtual tape (STK VSM3 / VTCS 6.1) in a DR environment. We have some
application tape that may need to be recovered - but the last time I
looked into the issue of moving virtual volumes offsite (back at VTCS 4.1)

it wasn't pretty.

So, I'm interested to hear if anyone has any workable methods for dealing
with the issue...
