Sounds like the PC in question should have had all sensitive data placed on an encrypted partition / filesystem. I think that Windows allows this. I know that Linux has the ability. I have no idea one way or the other about Mac. Actually, in order to be secure, encrypt the data on the mainframe before shipping it to the laptop.
