Sounds like the PC in question should have had all sensitive data placed
on an encrypted partition / filesystem. I think that Windows allows
this. I know that Linux has the ability. I have no idea one way or the
other about Mac.

Actually, in order to be secure, encrypt the data on the mainframe
before shipping it to the laptop. Now refuse to give anybody the key.
