Since device numbers are not necessarily canonical across systems, in a truly pathological case you could have volser W on device number X on system Y, and volser W on device number X on system Z, yet the two volsers labelled W are different volumes because the two devices numbered X are different devices. There is information in the Configuration Data Record which is unique to the device.
