Going way, way way back - some teletypes used Baudot code, which was a 5-bit code only allowing uppercase letters. There were two codes 'FIGS' (x'1B') on my chart and 'LTRS' (x'1F') to change interpretation of certain bit sequences so that letters, numerals, and punctuation could be transmitted. I believe this was also used on some paper-tape storage devices as well.
