It's been far too long for me to remember clearly, but I think there was a
"print buffer load" utility (originally a stand-alone BPS card deck; later,
something that ran under OS I suspect) that would tell the printer how to 
handle each code point. I think there were some options that in effect
selected a blank for unprintable characters.  I don't remember if this
was available for all print trains or just a select few.  (I don't even 
know for sure that I'm not making this up.)  

Am I trying to remember the UCS Load utility?  I know it existed, but I'm
not sure what it did.
