The Encryption Facility can use HW-based compression before encryption, all on the server. (One has to specify its use because there is no way to uncompress the data on a non-z server.) I think that at least one other vendor's product does this, too (perhaps even CA's but I have lost track of which is which).
Having said that, the compression algorithm used by the tape controllers is somewhat better than the one used on the servers.
