I can't say I agree with this.  We have a STK VSM, and all MVCs (the backing 
cartridges) are duplexed automatically by the VSM -- two cartridges written by 
two different drives.  We have had a few MVCs go bad on us, but we haven't lost 
any data due to their malfunction.  

Data loss due to human error has occurred, but it's harder to lose a file on 
tape than a file on DASD, at least the way we are doing things here.  (I am 
pondering the pros and cons of going to all-DASD operation here, though, so 
this part might be changing.  This discussion is interesting.)
