Bob, You do not need the VOL(*) parm if it is SMS-managed. VOL(*) will not tell SMS to span the file over the 9 volumes; in fact it tells SMS to use one volume. However, the DATACLAS assigned may include the dynamic volcount parameter which might enable the volume to span.
Can you double-check your STORCLAS routine and ensure that this data set will be assigned a storage class? It doesn't appear that it has... HTH, Greg Shirey Ben E.
