Jon,
IBM told us when we were an esp for 3390's they said IIRC that it was
an insurance policy about any residual data left there by you (when
they left) or when they arrived (by the plant).

As I was looking up the INIT command in the ICKDSF manual, I saw
something that had puzzled me before but I had forgotten about. In
the chapter about the INIT command, the first thing I see is the
statement "You should use the INSTALL command. See Chapter 18, . . . "
I obligingly went to chapter 18, where I see this:
"The INSTALL command is an enhanced installation procedure that
includes the writing of home address and record 0 on every track of
a 3380, 3390, and 9345 volume. You issue INSTALL before formatting
3380, 3390, and 9345 volumes on: a new DASD unit; replaced or
upgraded HDA; a DASD unit that has been physically relocated."
My question is, "So INSTALL writes the home address and record 0.
So what?" What is the benefit of doing INSTALL and INIT vs just
the INIT? (All of our DASD is on virtual arrays, in case that
makes a difference.) I have never bothered with the INSTALL
before; is there a reason I should?
Thanks,
Jon
