For the present, I generally use the ESA/390 PoP as the "rulebook." If it's there then it's safe to use (even if its listed under a feature, as long as it's non-privileged). Any code that I write will likely be in a new release of Product "X" and it's highly unlikely any customer that's paying money for the product will be running hardware older than that vintage. This is somewhat "pre-ALS-1" but it seems to be working okay for me now. After I was burned by ALC/SLB, I could only presume that I never checked the ESA/390 PoP the way I should have.
