Well, somebody finally went and looked at the physical printer. It's
defined to VPS as an HP9050, but that ain't what's plugged into the end
of the cable.
Thanks to all who responded on this thread. "Next time" I'll probably
get a lot further in diagnosing things before I have to return here for
help.
