It's not worse than tape backup.
DASD is more expensive, but better protected against media failures (most probably it's RAID-protected). DASD backup is as "online" as tapes in ATL (robotic library).
The disadvantage is price and limited capacity.
Last but not least, you can do "n-th" copy on the tape and remove it from library/operator room, just to sleep safe, while it is much harder to do with DASD media.
