Never underestimate the value of "networking", and your reputation. I had a trainee who just would not bother going to industry "get-togethers" - even IBM (product) presentations. He saw it as "old farts" getting together to drink beer and exchange old war stories and other bullshit. Hard to argue the facts, but I just couldn't convince him that the contacts made just might one day be useful.
