Thanks for the scientific investigation of what we all feel regularly,
take part in, and dislike at the same time.

I think the formula proves itsself: the population is keen on picing up
questions and answering them in detail, providing sideinfo for proof or
clarification. This sideinfo very easily leads to a branch from the
topic, to which the same rules apply: this is picked up again, answered,
clarified, corrected and within hours or days we have a widely brached
discussion that sometimes dies by itsself, sometimes has to be killed.
