That, of course, is true.
But, I'm assuming the OP wants accuracy.
NOT a method of perverting the stats.
So, just run the service, force updates (valid) and read the results.
If the OP wants accuracy, he shouldn't assume the stats are valid. Someone
might have perverted the stats, either for fun (unlikely) or because they
had good reason. I know of at least one application where the 'line count'
was used to control something that had absolutely nothing to do with the
number of lines in a member.
On top of that, members might not have any stats (and again, the owner of
the data set might not want them). If stats were generated, more directory
blocks could be required. This will cause problems if enough spare directory
blocks aren't available.
