Clear as mud. Conflicting statements. It sounds as if Brian Peterson's speculation is correct. Specifically, some hardware/software handshake functionality, that got backed out because it never really worked, was prematurely documented in z/OS MVS System Commands. I suppose an RCF is in order here.

The last time I saw something similar was with the SET TIMEZONE command. (It was documented for z/OS 1.6, but didn't work until z/OS 1.7.) Only this case is much worse. The operating system book describes hardware functionality that flat out doesn't exist in the referenced processor generation or the next! Will such functionality *ever* exist??

Ed,

Before you RCF, check out APAR OA17152.. I came across this the other
day when applying maint to 1.7. It seems to have the relevant doc
update, plus a change to the D M=CHP output to show an 'out of sync'
status when a CHP has been offlined from the HMC..
