Was his name <elided to avoid a lawsuit>? I had the identical thing
happen on my first job. His logic was that a SYSTEM abend must mean a
SYSTEM problem.

I even showed him what the problem was and how to fix it. He refused my
fix because "he didn't like it". I eventually threw him out of my
office. Loudly enough to disturb the programmer who were in a different
area. I got a talking to from my manager about that. Didn't do any good.
