We are attempting to get SAE R12 - and FDR-SAR 54.50 as well - to
'find' the console attached to a Visara 25S console/communications
controller.
Both work fine using a 3174-1L and dumb terminal, IPLing from either
tape or CD.
It seems like the CHPID just won't come alive. This is an EMIF CHPID
and we've checked the IO gen and it looks good there. I can vary the
device offline on a VM system (we normally use the dumb terminal on VM
so we do know it and the CHPID work OK), and the CHPID as well, and
see that action reflected on the Visara status display as a 503-03 (CU
opnline, not connected) error, for that path. We are making sure the
path is online to our test LPAR used for SAE and SAR, at the HMC
level. When we try to IPL, either from tape or CD, the path status on
the Visara doesn't change to an online state, the utilities cannot
find the console (obviously), and that's the end of it.
Gary, from my Google search it appears that the Visara 25S is a SNA
control unit. Although z/OS now supports SNA consoles, FDR-SAR does
not. The protocols necessary to communicate with the SNA console are
much too complex to build into a stand-alone product like SAR,
especially given its size limitations (it has to fit on cylinder 0 track
0 of a disk).
If you have no non-SNA consoles, you can always use the primative
console function built into the HMC. There are instructions in the SAR
section of the FDR manual (section 15).
