This mechanism has been supported for a long time. I've been sharing JES2 between different releases since OS/390 V1R1. Just follow the simple steps to create a JES2 MAS, including basic sysplex if needed.
As Mark indicated, make sure all toleration maintenance is applied to all the systems.
