Regarding "less than useful messages"

It sounds as if you should create a SHARE requirement (or two) against:

 - LE messages for what they do (and don't) help you with
 - COBOL (better run-time diagnostics for mixed COBOL and Java)
 - Fault Analyzer and/or Debug Tool for better mixed COBOL and Java support
