Check the archives for the moaning and groaning about layoffs, mainframe power-downs, and the lack of openings/opportunities.
I don't believe it's all doom and gloom but any US company that can't find domestic sysprogs is either not looking very hard or is offering $36,000/year. Unless you have contacts and very specific skills that you know are in demand (more specific than general MVS sysprog) I would look elsewhere.
