Well, back in 1999 I was given the task to phase out the usage of reel tapes on what I think was a Motorola 220? Believe it or not, this machine is probably still running. The coil still needs to be wound manually by a Siemens engineer who last time I heard wanted a lot of money to get on the plane to go to South Africa. This machine had one Storagetek Reel drive that was pretty much on its last legs and two very old 40M hard disks, which would be written to until full, at which time it switches to the other whilst kicking off a process to write all the data on the disk to tape. My task was to write a C-Program that will use a Storagetek module(DLL)to talk to this tape drive over SCSI and save the info on PC hard Drive from where it would be connect:direct'd to the HQ.
The purpose of the 'Real Mainframe' because it was built on wat looked like old steel shelves, was to write billing data for the remaining 180 Telex users in South Africa, who had some legal issue with Faxed documents as recognized legal documents. So my guess would be that it would be that fellow.
