First I've heard that this is a z/OS-only list. The IBM-VM list gets more
VM-specific traffic, but to my knowledge this list is about anything to do
with IBM mainframes.

Good recommendation.

Best Practice (and almost universal one) is to Do It Virtually. There are
powerful advantages to this, including better control of resources, ease and
control of communication between test and production environments, and just
generally higher productivity. You might want to consider doing your z/OS
testing under VM too.

By all means ask on the IBM-VM list for a probably more detailed answer.
