I have to admit.. I find this all pretty depressing. Initially, I thought IBM was right to trounce PSI. The thought of someone muscling in on z's bread-and-butter seemed ludicrous.
However, with the Flex deal falling, no emulator type access allowed... the future looks dim indeed. I consider myself a very strong advocate of the z platform. But I have to wonder if my choice is as wise as it should be. For all the faults of IBM (of which many of the listers have their favorites), z/OS and z9 hardware is really fantastic. The strides IBM has made in encryption, ZIIPs, ZAAPs, interoperability, serverpac, internet deliverables and generally driving technology forward (cutting the path that other want to follow) is really something. While I hate seeing anyone killing something I really enjoy, it seems that IBM is heading that direction in reference to it's development population. I would ask all of the listers to strongly indicate to their IBM reps that the lack of a strong developer population for z/OS will ultimately lead to it's demise. The ability to develop on the platform at a reasonable cost, keeps the platform viable. We all have our favorite small vendor that started out small and had something really valuable to contribute. IBM employs a ton of really smart people... but they can't do everything. JZOS comes to mind (Kirk and Steve at Dovetail). So, I am going to put my money where my mouth is.. and IBM is going to hear from me loud and clear that they need to present their plan for the future.
