1. I do not believe "other platforms" are &favoriteexpletive.
2. I am not arrogant and certainly not blind.
3. I am not responsible for the mainframe market share situation. I neither
buy nor sell mainframes.
4. I have heard the costs of hardware and software, but I still believe
arrogance is no cost.
5. I do understand the competition (&favoriteexpletive).
6. Recent young graduates are free to work on any platform of their
choosing. Undoubtedly the market influences
   their choices.
Not only the market. Also OPINION. The opinion about mainframes is usually BAD. Maybe false but bad. In fact I don't care about graduates, I care about managers. They decide about new projects, they choose platforms. They spent not their money according to their opinion.
7. I do believe the learning curve for Novell, circa 1995, was orders of
magnitude less than zOS + subsystems, circa 1995.

Is it good or bad for mainframe ?
In my opinion VERY BAD.

BTW: I was NetWare admin in 1995, AFAIK there was no z/OS, no even OS/390, but
MVS 5 in those days.
I have never been learning MVS (started with OS/390), but simply don't agree with
"order of magnitude".
Probably you don't know what tasks can be inclued in NetWare admin job. A lot of, i.e. how to implement jukebox in NetWare or Windows? How to implement NDS for Windows, ZENworks, GroupWise, remote accesses, IPX routing, all the HW LAN issues, bandwith analysis, delegation of administration authorities, NDS design, backups, BWO features, printers, tape HW, etc. etc.
So fast forward 12 years, "is learning to be a PC based network "sysprog"
more difficult than zOS, less so, or about the same?
It depends. I know very wise PC-folks, and "z/OS sysprogs" with very long
experience (15+ years) and very limited knowledge. Usually their knowledge is also quite
ancient.

Please note, final question is posed without beliefs, opinions, standpoints,
political biases, or prejudices. I reserve the right to invoke arrogance at
some later date.
Like the answer, I suppose.
