What about the old 967x MPP's?
They were designed to manage DB2 parallelism.
And, how about SYSPLEX AE's?

Dr Codd & Dr Date went through a lot of work on parallelism and showing how an 
SQL query could be broken down into many parallel steps and re-combined.
