It talked about SPANNED records with records > CI/CA, but I couldn't tell if this meant that you could or could not have an ESDS file with individual (spanned) records > 32K." I have tried to do this in both Cobol and Assembler and was only successful in Assembler. I created an ESDS with 41000 byte records, and did am IDCAMS PRINT to check that the record was truly 41000 bytes. I have a sample if it is required.
