So ask already!  Don't wait to be asked to the prom - if you want to dance,

I disagree with your "more and more" assertion -- there are fewer and fewer 
sysprogs around these days, after all.  (Check the archives here.)

That is certainly one way to learn.  Reading books and taking classes is 
another.  
 
But if your company doesn't believe in you enough to pay to send you to, say, 
a z/OS Installation and Tuning class (even though you are in Apps), why 
should the Tech Support manager (or a sysprog) believe in you enough to 
spend time (i.e., money) out of their limited budget to answer your questions 
whenever you feel like asking (and learning)??  
 
Besides, there are a surprisingly small number of sites with proper security... 
and the requirements for security/audit compliance/support have increased 
substantially (what with SOX, HIPPA, etc.).  Cover-ups don't stop at the 
boardroom, you know.
